Writing Anchor Standard # 8

On behalf of the CCESA, this week’s NEARC Anchor Standard Challenge focuses on Writing Anchor Standard # 8- Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

In other words….

•         Get relevant information from multiple sources
•         Assess the credibility/accuracy of each source
•         Integrate without plagiarizing

Below is a brief snapshot of what Writing Standard # 8 means at the different grade levels.

Kindergarten:  With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources.

1st Grade:  With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources.

2nd Grade:  With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources.

3rd Grade:  Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

4th Grade:  Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, provide a list of sources.

5th Grade:  Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources.

6th Grade:  Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.

7th Grade:  Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

8th Grade:  Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

9th-10th Grades:  Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

11th-12th Grades:  Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the strengths and limitations of each source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience; assess the strength and limitations of each source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and overreliance on any one source and following a standard format for citation.

What can you do? After examining the K-12 Anchor Standard of the week…  Investigate what that standard means at your students’ grade level/content area.  Why is it important that your grade level/content area teach the standard?  What does the standard look like at the grade level below and above? What does this standard mean for my instructional and assessment practices?
